Tonsillitis Pictures

What is Tonsillitis?

Tonsils are the two oval-shaped tissue pads situated posterior to the throat which filter bacteria and virus. These contain antibodies which stop the spread of infection in the system. Tonsillitis or inflammation of the tonsils occurs if the tonsils become overwhelmed with microorganisms causing abrupt sore throat and painful swelling.

A patient with tonsillitis may exhibit difficulty in swallowing, ear pain, hyperthermia, reddened tonsils with yellow to white coating, headache, a very sore throat, swollen glands in the neck, bad breath, voice changes and in some cases, loss of voice.

It is important to first identify the causative agent of tonsillitis, whether it is caused by a virus or a bacteria. If it is viral in origin, tonsillitis will go away on its own. If the causes of tonsillitis are streptococcus or other bacteria, then antibiotic medications are administered to treat the infection. It can be in any form, either through injection or by oral preparation for about ten days. Usually, the disease is cured within seven days, nevertheless, swollen tonsils and glands return to normal size in several weeks. If discomfort stops, it is still advised to continue the therapy until completing the entire amount of time prescribed by the physician. For tonsillitis, drinking cold liquids and having popsicles may help lessen the inflammation. Gargling with salt water may help. Other treatment includes lozenges and acetaminophen.
