What is Smallpox ?
Smallpox is a very contagious, often deadly as well as disfiguring disease which is caused by the variola virus. It is thought by scientist to have been about for 10s of thousands of years. There are few illnesses which have had such a destructive result on the history or health of humans on earth.
There is neither treatment nor cure of smallpox. But there is a vaccination which is the only prevention.
Smallpox which is naturally occurring was wiped out worldwide by 1980 – which was the result of an exceptional campaign of immunization. But, interest in this illness has remained very high because stocks of the virus that causes smallpox have been kept for research and are stored in 2 high-security labs – 1 is in the United States and 1 is in Siberia. Additionally it is believed that several other governments or bodies may also hold stockpiles of this virus. This leads to much concern that smallpox can be utilities as a biological war agent.
The 1st symptoms of smallpox normally appear twelve to fourteen days after infected. During the incubation of 7 to 17 days, you can look and feel healthy and can not infect others.
Following the incubation period, there will be a sudden onset of symptoms and signs which are flu like. They include:
- Overall discomfort
- Severe back pain
- Severe fatigue
- Vomiting, diarrhea or both
