What are Skin bumps?
There are a plethora of conditions of the skin that create bumps and lumps to appear on the surface as well as just below the surface of the skin.
Individuals frequently describe any swollen localized areas on, or under the skin as bumps are lumps. Bumps are mostly on or under the skin and can result from many conditions which give rise to rashes of the skin, as well as many conditions which can result in raised solitary lumps on the skin. Tumors, body’s reaction to injury or trauma as well as infections all can cause bumps or lumps which appear to be underneath or on the skin.
These bumps and lumps, depending on the cause, vary in size and shape, and can be soft or firm to the touch. The skin overlying it may be ulcerated or reddened. Bumps of the skin can or may not be tender or painful again depending on the cause of the lesions.
The most commons causes include:
- Actinic Keratosis
- Acne or pimples
- Insect sting allergies
- Erythema Nodosum
- Keratosis Pilaris

The locations of bumps often can offer a clue to the cause. Bumps which are itchy on the genitals can be caused by scabies, lichen planus, and molluscum public lice, while a scalp which is itchy can be caused by follicuitis which is an inflammation of the follicle of the hair, eczema, psoriasis, or lichen simplex. Bumps of acne usually involve the neck, trunk of the body, and especially the face, while some types of eczema as well as psoriasis can affect feet or hands. Bites by insects are normally found in those areas which are not covered by hair or clothing. As well as folliculitis of the scalp other areas of hair that friction, moisture or injury can affect such as inner thigh, buttock, beard area, or legs.
