What is Retroverted Uterus?

A Retroverted Uterus is a variation of the pelvic anatomy in females that is normal. The uterus body is tipped backward rather than towards the front. It is also called a “tipped uterus”.

Retroverted uterus is the normal or common uterine position in approximately 20% of women.

Pelvic ligaments which are weakening and linked with menopause can cause this condition in those women who did not have a retroverted uterus previously.

Uterus that is enlarged either by tumor or as the result of pregnancy can also lead to retroverted uterus.

Scar tissue because of pelvic adhesions may also hold the uterus in a retroversion position. The scarring can result because of:

  • Pelvic inflammatory disease
  • Salpingitis
  • Endometriosis

A retroverted uterus never really causes any symptoms and rarely causes discomfort or pain. The position of the uterus is usually found during an examination of the pelvic region. But, there are times when a retroverted uterus can be mistaken for a mass in the pelvic region or a fibroid enlargement. An examination by ultrasound may also be used to settle on the exact positioning of the uterus when necessary.

There is no treatment usually necessary. Any disorders which are underlying such as adhesions or endometriosis should be treated as needed. Normally retroverted uterus does not cause any problems.

This abnormal uterus positioning can be caused by salpingitis, pressure from a growing tumor or endometriosis. These problems need to be ruled out especially if an individual has other symptoms with pain.
