What is a Discoid Rash?
Discoid rashes or medically known as discoid lupus erythematosus is a persistent, photosensitive dermatosis which are characterized by red flaky, itchy skin rashes that are usually oval or round in shape and occur frequently on the face, neck, scalp and trunks. If the scalp is affected, patchy, localized hair loss can be noted. Because of the inflammation, the hair follicles lose their hold on the hair strands. This is a benign type of lupus as it only affects the skin and minimally the joints, which is contrary to systemic lupus which already includes the internal organs.
Eventhough discoid rash takes time to heal; topical cortisones are known to effectively relieve the symptoms of lesions. These creams can lessen the inflammation in the affected areas. If the skin is hypersensitive to ultraviolet lights from the sun, preventive measures must be taken such as applying recommended sunscreen lotions before going outdoors.
The spread of the rash to several regions of the body can be controlled by taking some precautionary measures. In addition to the avoidance of cumulative sun exposure, application of sunscreen and wearing protective clothing, it is also important to observe good and healthy living such as doing some exercises, relaxation techniques, yoga, balanced diet, good skin care and adequate amount of rest. These measures will help keep the symptoms under control.
