Canker Sore Pictures
Canker sores are also referred to as aphthous ulcers and are shallow, small lesions which occur on the tissues of the mouth which are soft and also at the gum base. Canker sores, unlike sores known as cold sores, do not develop on the exterior of the lips and are not contagious. But they can often be extremely painful and often make talking and eating hard.
Many canker sores do go away in a few weeks. If you have any unusually painful and large canker sores as well as sores which do not heal, check with your physician or dentist for help.
Several kinds of canker sores exist and include minor, major as well as herpetiform sores.
Minor canker sores are most commonly canker sores that:
- Are less than approximately ½ inch or 12 mm in diameter
- Are shaped like an oval
- Heal with no scarring in 1 to 2 weeks
Major canker sores are less common sores that:
- Are bigger than about ½ inch or 12 mm in diameter
- Have edges which are irregular
- Can take up to 6 weeks to heal and leave widespread scarring
Herpetiform canker sores usually develop late in life and:
- Are no bigger than about 1/8th inch or 3 mm in diameter
- Usually occur in clusters of ten to one hundred sores
- Have edges which are irregular
- Usually heal with no scarring in 1 to 2 weeks
