Scabies Pictures

Dec 22 2010 Published by under Diseases and Conditions,S

Scabies is a skin condition which is itchy and caused by tiny burrowing mites which are known as Sarcoptes scabiei. The occurrence of these mites leads to itching which is extreme in the area where they burrow. This need to scratch can be very strong while at night.

Scabies is very contagious and is easily spread thru close contact such as in the family, school class, nursing home as well as childcare. Since scabies are so contagious, physicians often advise treatment for the whole family as well as groups which are contact groups to help eradicate the mites.

Scabies is easily treated as there are drugs which can be applied to the skin which kills the mites, but you might still have some itching for quite a few weeks later.

Scabies Symptoms

What is Apert Syndrome?

This is a disease that is genetic where the seams in between the bones of the skull close earlier than normally. This will affect the form of the face as well as the head.

This syndrome is passed down thru families. It is passed down as a dominant autosomal trait which means only 1 parent needs to pass the gene that is faulty to an offspring for that child to develop the condition. There are some cases which occur with no family history.

This syndrome develops because of a gene mutation. This gene is known as “fibroblast growth factor receptor 2.” The defective gene can cause some of the sutures which are bony of the skull to close up too soon which is a condition known as craniosynostosis.

Individuals with this syndrome a very distinctive looking face and there can be full length fusion or webbing between the second, third, or fourth toes and the fingers. As the child maintains growth, the bones in the feet and hands become more and more fused, which decreases the function as well as flexibility.

Some other syndromes which include craniosynostosis may lead to the parallel form of the head and face, but don’t include the serious foot and hand difficulties of apert syndrome.

Symptoms of Apert Syndrome

  • Premature closure of the sutures in between skull bones, noted by ridging all along the sutures
  • Numerous infections of the ear
  • Severe or fusion webbing of the second, third, and fourth finger which is frequently called “mitten hands”
  • Loss of hearing
  • Late-closing or large soft spot in a baby’s skull
  • Possibility of slow intellectual growth which varies from individual to individual
  • Bulging or prominent eyes
  • Under development of the mid-face which is severe
  • Skeletal – especially limb – abnormalities
  • Height which is short
  • Toe fusion or webbing

Fever Blisters Pictures

Dec 20 2010 Published by under Diseases and Conditions,F

Fever blisters which are also known as cold sores are small blisters in groups that develop around the mouth as well as the lips. Skin surround these blisters are often sore, red and swollen. These blisters can often break open, ooze a fluid which is clear and then form a scab. Normally they heal after a few days to a couple of weeks.

These fever blisters are caused by herpes simplex virus. Actually there are 2 kinds of herpes simplex virus and both cause mouth and lip sores as well as genital herpes.

Herpes simplex virus normally invades the body thru a skin break inside or around the mouth. It usually spreads if individual contacts infected fluid or a cold sore by kissing someone who is infected or coming in contact with that individual’s saliva. If a parent has a cold sore it can often spread to her or his child. These fever blisters also can be spread to additional body areas.

Fever Blisters Pictures

  • Painful, fluid-filled small blisters on a red, raised area of skin, normally around the mouth.
  • Tingling or pain known as prodrome that often comes first 1 to 2 days before the blisters.
  • Normally lasts for ten to fourteen days.

Fever blisters mostly develop on the lips but occasionally they can develop on fingers, chin or the nasal nostrils. And, although unusual, they have been known to develop in the mouth – often on the roof of the mouth or gums. If the sores develop on soft tissues inside the mouth such as inside the cheek or underneath the tongue they actually may be canker sores instead of fever blisters.

Fifth Disease Pictures

Dec 15 2010 Published by under Diseases and Conditions,F

What is Fifth disease?

This is a name for a parvovirus infection which is common as well as highly contagious ailment of childhood. It is also known as slapped-cheek disease due to the characteristic face rash which develops. This infection is called fifth disease because historically it was 1 of 5 common childhood disease typified by a rash.

In many children, this infection is very mild as well as requiring little treatment. But, this infection occurs in some women who are pregnant and can lead to health problems which are serious for the fetus. This infection is also serious for individuals with any type of anemia or those with an immune system that is compromised.

The majority of individuals with this infection normally have no symptoms or signs. When signs do become visible, they differ a great deal by age.

Fifth disease Symptoms

Early symptoms and signs of this disease in children can include:

  • Throat which is sore
  • Fever which is slight
  • Stomach upset
  • Fatigue
  • Headache
  • Itching

Some days following the formation of early on symptoms, a very characteristic facial rash which is bright red can appear – normally on both cheeks. Ultimately, it can expand to the trunk, thighs, buttocks as well as the arms, where this rash is lacy, pink in appearance and is slightly raised.

Usually, this rash develops near the beginning of the end of the infection. It is probable to mistaken this rash for some other rash caused by a viral infection or a rash which is drug-related. The rash can come and go for as long as 3 weeks, becoming most visible when the child is exposed to any excessive temperatures or expends any time in the sun.

Adults do not normally develop this slapped-cheek rash. Rather the most well-known symptom of this infection in adults is soreness in the joint which lasts day to even weeks. The joints more commonly affected are in the wrists, knees, ankles as well as the hands.

Baby Acne Pictures

Dec 08 2010 Published by under B,Diseases and Conditions

Approximately 20% of newborn infants can become affected by a skin acne that is known as neonatorum or simply baby acne. This is often a matter of great concern to new parents as they do not want their new, tender baby to be affected by acne. It is not pretty but it is fairly common and only short-term. There is very little that can be done to avert baby acne. The best management is simply to do nothing.

Baby acne usually occurs on the chin, forehead as well as the cheeks. It is normally characterized by red, small bumps or pustules. It often begins within the 1st 3 to 4 weeks after birth. Baby acne can look worse when the baby is crying or fussy.

Some babies will also develop white, tiny bumps on the cheeks, chin or nose. These are referred to as miia.

Baby acne is caused by acne vulgaris which occurs by over activity of the sebaceous glands that creates a lot of excess oil. When this extreme oil creation joins with bacteria which produce acne as well as hair follicles, it forms an appropriate setting for acne to breakout. But, the main reason for baby acne is hormones which get passed from the mother during the birth process. These hormones stimulate the sebaceous glands in the baby and so acne is the result.

Normally, baby acne begins around 4 weeks of age and continues until the age of 4 months. It can also develop on the back of the baby. This condition is more common in male babies than females.

A new mother should visit with the baby’s physician if there is apprehension about the baby’s complexion, the baby’s acne gets worse or it does not go away within 3 months.

What are Kidney Stones?

They are hard, small deposits which form inside the kidneys. They are composed of acid salts as well as minerals. These stones have many causes. In one frequent scenario, the kidney stones develop when the urine is concentrated, allowing the minerals to crystallize and join together.

  • Pain which spreads into the lower abdomen and groin
  • Pain when urinating
  • Red, brown or red urine
  • Vomiting and nausea
  • Constant urge to urinate
  • Chills as well as fever if an infection is present
