Multiple Sclerosis Pictures

Nov 10 2010 Published by under Diseases and Conditions,M

Multiple sclerosis also known as MS is a devastating condition where the body’s own immune system slowly eats away at the sheath which is protective and covers the nerves. This hinders the communication between the rest of the body and the brain. Eventually, this will cause wear and tear of the nerves which is a problem that is not reversible.

There are a wide variety of symptoms, dependent on the total damage and which nerves are affected. Individuals with relentless cases of MS can lose the capacity to speak or walk. MS may be extremely difficult to make a diagnosis especially earlier in the disease as the symptoms come and go – often disappearing for months.

MS can develop at any age, but is more often begun in individuals between the ages of 20 years of age and 40 years of age. Females are more prone to develop MS than males.

Symptoms and signs of MS are varied and depend on the location of the affected nerve. The symptoms and signs can include:

  • Weakness or numbness in 1 or more limbs, typically occurring on 1 side of the body at a time or the bottom half of the body.
  • Complete or partial loss of vision, normally in 1 eye at a time, often accompanied with pain with eye movement.
  • Blurring of vision or double vision
  • Pain or tingling in parts of the body
  • Sensations of electric-shock which occurs with some head movements.
  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue

Many individuals with MS, usually in the first stages of the disease, have relapses of symptoms, which are followed with periods of partial or total remission. Symptoms and signs of MS usually are worsened or triggered by a body temperature increase.

Lipoma Pictures

Nov 10 2010 Published by under Diseases and Conditions,L

What is a Lipoma?

This is a fatty lump, slow growing, that is more often positioned between the muscle layer and the overlaying skin. Most of the time lipomas are simple to identify since they readily move with the slight pressure of the finger. They are also doughy to the touch and normally not tender. An individual can have one lipoma or more than one. Lipomas may happen at any age but normally they are most often found during middle adulthood.

Lipomas are not cancerous and are normally harmless. Generally treatment is not necessary but when a lipoma is located in an area that is bothersome, is growing or is painful, the individual can want to remove it.

Lipomas are

  • Situated directly under the skin – They mostly occur in the shoulders, abdomen, back, arms, thighs as well as the neck.
  • Doughy and soft to the touch of a finger – They easily move with very slight pressure with the finger.
  • Usually small – A lipoma is normally less than 2 inches or 5 cm in diameter, but is able to grow much larger.
  • Occasionally painful – Lipoma may be painful if it grows and is pressing on nerves which are nearby or if it contains numerous blood vessels.

A lipoma is hardly ever a medical condition which is serious. But if an individual notices a swelling or lump anywhere on the body, have it checked out by a doctor.

The exact cause of lipomas is not known. Lipomas are prone to run in families, so factors which are genetic are likely to play a role in their development.

Athlete’s foot Pictures

Nov 09 2010 Published by under A,Diseases and Conditions

What is athlete’s foot?

It is a type of fungal infection which grows in the areas which are moist between the toes and often on other area of the feet. Athlete’s foot normally causes stinging, itching as well as burning.

The scientific name for athlete’s foot is tinea pedis and is linked to other infections caused by fungi with names which are similar, including:

Tinea corporis or ringworm of the body

This causes a scaly, red circle or ring of rash which develops on the top layer of the skin.

Tinea cruris or Jock itch

This causes a rash which affects the genitals, buttock as well as the inner areas of the upper thighs

Tinea capitis or Ringworm in the scalp

This type of infection is more frequent in children. It consists of itchy, red patches in the scalp which leaves patches of baldness.

Symptoms and signs of athlete’s foot are many, but an individual possibly will not develop all of them:

  • Stinging, itching as well as burning in between the toes
  • Stinging, itching as well as burning of the feet on the soles
  • Blisters which are itchy
  • Peeling and cracking skin, on the soles of the feet as well as in between the toes
  • Dryness of the skin which is excessive and located on the sides or bottoms of the feet
  • Thick, crumby, ragged, discolored toenails which in some case are separating from the nail beds

Onychomycosis is a fungal infection of the toenails – and can start without or with any further symptoms and signs of athlete’s foot.

If you develop a rash on the foot which does not improve or gets worse after using home remedies, see your primary care physician. You should seek medical attention sooner if you observe excessive swelling, drainage, fever or redness. If an individual is a diabetic and believe he/she has athlete’s foot, they need to see a doctor immediately.

Cellulitis Pictures

Nov 09 2010 Published by under C,Diseases and Conditions

What is cellulitis?

It is a common but possibly severe infection of the skin caused by bacteria. Cellulitis develops as a red area of skin that feels tender and hot, is swollen and can rapidly spread.

The skin on the lower legs is the more commonly affected area, but cellulitis may also occur anywhere on the face or body. Cellulitis can affect only the surface of the skin – or, it can also affect the tissues underlying the skin and may spread to the bloodstream and lymphatic nodes.

When left untreated, the infection may rapidly spread turning into a life-threatening condition. That is why it is extremely important to get immediate medical treatment if symptoms of cellulitis occur.

Cellulitis Symptoms

  • Swelling
  • Redness
  • Pain
  • Tenderness
  • Fever
  • Warmth

Changes in the skin can be accompanied by fever. The area of redness over time is prone to expand. Red small spots can appear on the top of the skin that is reddened and less commonly, blisters which are small can form and burst.

You should see your doctor if you have a rash that is swollen, tender, warm and red – and if it is expanding. You should try to see the doctor as quickly as possible – usually the same day. If pain or fever develops with the rash, or the rash is rapidly changing, seek emergency treatment. Cellulitis is an infection that needs to be indentified and treated early due to the condition causing a severe infection by rapidly spreading thru out the body.

Oral Herpes Pictures

Nov 07 2010 Published by under Diseases and Conditions,O

Herpes of the oral form is infection by “herpes simplex virus” and is an infection which causes sores on the gums, lips, roof of the mouth, inside of cheeks, as well as tongue. These sores are painful and the individual can develop symptoms and signs such as muscle aches or fever.

This “herpes simplex virus” normally affects just humans. Sores in the mouth commonly happen in children who are between 1 to 2 years of age but they also affect individuals of any age as well as at any time during the year.

Herpes is spread by contacting infected skin, saliva as well as mucous membranes. Since this virus is very contagious, many people have become infected by one herpes sub-type prior to adulthood.

Once herpes infects an individual, it has an capacity to advance to three phases.

Prime Infection

This virus enters the mucous membrane or skin and reproduces. This is the stage where sores which are oral and additional signs for instance fever can develop.

  • Virus can not necessarily cause symptoms or sores and may be known as asymptomatic infection
  • Asymptomatic infections are twice as likely as a disease accompanied by symptoms

Latency

Starting at the site of infection, this virus can move to the nerve tissue in the spine known as “dorsal root ganglion”. It is there that the virus replicates again and grows to be inactive.

Recurrence

As soon as encountered by stresses, either physical or emotional, this virus can reactivate and develop new symptoms and sores.

Cherry Angiomas Pictures

Nov 05 2010 Published by under C,Diseases and Conditions

Cherry angiomas are skin spots containing a deep red color which reflects the name. They are non-cancerous growths which are benign and normally not dangerous. Normally they cause problems which are only aesthetic in character, often causing a scar which is blood-colored and that is permanent but are normally very small. Cherry angiomas usually occur in individuals as they age. According to research, cherry angiomas more commonly affect those individuals over thirty. They materialize on skin as dots which are very small and have a cherry deep red color as well as a texture which is smooth. Cherry angiomas can begin as tiny specks; as time passes they may develop to as big as ½ cm. They are most found on the trunk of the body but also occur on the head, face, limbs and neck. They rarely require medical treatment but if an individual wants them to be removed there are some medical treatments for them.

One medical treatment for the removal of cherry angiomas is to be frozen thru a procedure referred to as cryotherapy. Reports show that this procedure is a method of removal which involves using a probe which contains nitrogen in liquid form that generates temperatures that are extremely freezing on a portion of the cherry angiomas.

Another treatment to the other extreme is to singe the growth off. This involves cutting or burning the growth thru procedures known as electrosurgery or cautery. With electrosurgery, a current of electricity is normally used to eliminate the cherry angiomas and to limit or stop bleeding. Cautery is used as an option due to the small size of the cherry angiomas.

Gingivitis Pictures

Nov 04 2010 Published by under Diseases and Conditions,G

Gingivitis is a mild form of periodontal or gum disease and is quite common. Gingivitis can cause inflammation or swelling of the gums. Since gingivitis is mild, it is easy not to know that the disease is developing. But gingivitis should be taking very critically as the sooner treatment is started the better able it is to evade more serious diseases of the gums.

When an individual has gums which are swollen and which bleed when brushed, it is a good bet the individual has gingivitis. The common cause of gum diseases such as gingivitis is oral hygiene which is bad. Oral health with good habits such as flossing and brushing daily will usually help with gingivitis prevention.

Symptoms and Signs of Gingivitis

  • Soft gums
  • Swollen gums
  • Gums which bleed easily when flossing or brushing
  • Change in color of gums from pink and healthy to dusky red
  • Breath that is bad

Gingivitis always starts with plaque. This sticky, invisible film is made up mainly of bacteria. This plaque develops on the teeth when sugars and starches in food interact with normally found bacteria in the mouth. Daily brushing of teeth will remove plaque. The only problem is that plaque can re-form quickly, normally within 24 hours.

Plaque that stays on the teeth any longer than 2 to 3 days will harden – especially under the gum line into tarter or calculus. This tartar can make plaque much more difficult to eliminate and therefore can act as a pool for bacteria to gather. And, much more, you normally are unable to get tartar with flossing and brushing – which means that the individual needs a dental professional cleaning in order to remove it.

The more time that plaque and tartar stays on the teeth, the more it irritates the gingival which is the area of your gum around the bottom of your teeth. Then with more time, the gums develop more swelling and begin to bleed easier.

Leukoplakia Pictures

Nov 04 2010 Published by under Diseases and Conditions,L

What is Leukoplakia?

Leukoplakia normally affects areas of the mouth which have mucus membranes. It normally happens because of an irritation. The sores normally grow on the tongue as well as developing on the inside of cheeks.

Mouth irritations can happen because of teeth that are rough, rough spots on dentures, crowns as well as fillings. It can also happen from smoking and other use of tobacco. Individuals who are pipe smokers are at a higher risk for this problem as are individuals who keep snuff or chewing tobacco in between their lower mouth and gums for long periods.

Patches of leukoplakia can occur on female genitals in the external area with the cause for this being unidentified. Leukoplakia can turn cancerous. This is a disorder which is most generally found in the elderly.

Leukoplakia has various appearances and changes can usually develop on the gums, the inside of cheeks, and the bottom of the mouth as well as often on the tongue and can also appear as:

  • Grayish or white patches which can not be wiped away.
  • Texture which is flat or irregular.
  • Hardened or thickened areas.

There are times when there may as well be raised lesions which are red and these are most likely to show changes which are precancerous.

There is an unusual form of leukoplakia which is “hairy” and develops because of the virus known as Epstein-Barr. It is normally only seen in individuals who are infected with HIV, have AIDS or AIDS-related complex. This type has fuzzy patches which are white. They are located on the tongue and less frequently in mouth areas.

Canker Sore Pictures

Nov 04 2010 Published by under C,Diseases and Conditions

Canker sores are also referred to as aphthous ulcers and are shallow, small lesions which occur on the tissues of the mouth which are soft and also at the gum base. Canker sores, unlike sores known as cold sores, do not develop on the exterior of the lips and are not contagious. But they can often be extremely painful and often make talking and eating hard.

Many canker sores do go away in a few weeks. If you have any unusually painful and large canker sores as well as sores which do not heal, check with your physician or dentist for help.

Several kinds of canker sores exist and include minor, major as well as herpetiform sores.

Minor canker sores are most commonly canker sores that:

  • Are less than approximately ½ inch or 12 mm in diameter
  • Are shaped like an oval
  • Heal with no scarring in 1 to 2 weeks

Major canker sores are less common sores that:

  • Are bigger than about ½ inch or 12 mm in diameter
  • Have edges which are irregular
  • Can take up to 6 weeks to heal and leave widespread scarring

Herpetiform canker sores usually develop late in life and:

  • Are no bigger than about 1/8th inch or 3 mm in diameter
  • Usually occur in clusters of ten to one hundred sores
  • Have edges which are irregular
  • Usually heal with no scarring in 1 to 2 weeks
